background / biography
Sol Philcox is a 17 year old Blues singer/guitarist from Norfolk, England. He has been playing guitar since the age of 13, and has been singing and playing drums to large audiences since the age of 5. Sol was hailed as a drumming prodigy at an early age, but had to stop due to living/noise situations. It was at the age of 14 when he picked up the guitar. At the age of 15, he officially put his drumming on a hiatus and continued to learn to play guitar, only returning to the drum stool to enter the National UK under 18 drummer of the year competition, in which he achieved a place in the final 40. However, by the age of 16 he was playing guitar and fronting bands of various styles. Sol has started or been involved in many different projects, many of which have been far from it, but blues has always been his passion. taking his cue from Stevie Ray Vaughan after he first heard the famous 'live at Montreaux 1982' CD aged 15. Sol has also dabbled in many many other styles of guitar playing, including country chicken picking which he started after hearing the Nashville session master Brent Mason in the summer of 2006. After 6 months of learning this style, Sol had gained the attention of some top music industry people in Nashville Tennessee which resulted in a large number of invitations and offers, even an offer from the aforementioned Brent Mason to come to Nashville and shadow him and jam and learn the ways of the business and the town itself. Sadly, Sol was unable to carry out this dream offer from his number #1 guitar idol due to financial/family situation, which is still something he deeply resents. However, Sol has returned to his fender stratocaster and continues to beat it, bleed on it, cover it in sweat and throw it around in a live frenzy which he has done his best to recreate in a studio situation. Sol has never had the money to pay for pro studio time, so instead tries to record his songs at home in his living room (see warp speed country chicken picking explosion 'Toad Rag') on £9.99 microphones and a maplin mixer, or by doing his best to take advantage of the basic recording studio at Paston 6th form college. Thanks to teacher Ron Sayer, he has occasionally been allowed a few hours to roam free in the studio and record some tracks. These rushed, unmastered and raw recordings can be found on this page (Blues Rock anti-evangelist song 'Preacher Man' and Stratocaster-strangling blues wild instrumental 'Breaking the Bank') Sol hopes to continue to record in this way until any other opportunities arise. Sol hopes to either further his career as a blues songwriter/guitarist/singer, or as a country session player in Nashville Tennessee. In summer 2008 he hopes to play Montreal Jazz festival in Canada and release an album on an independent distribution label.
